Recently I got asked a blog interview question which involved asking for: [I quote] "my tips on how to become more courageous with larger scale prints" (I think I got asked this because I've been seen to use boldy, more shouty patterns). This got me to thinking about questions of taste and our desire as crafters to express ourselves.
It always makes me a little sad when folks say; 'I'd be too scared to do that'; or 'that might look a bit crazy' etc. It's also a bit sad when folks are apologetic about their makes. I'm not saying that we should become crafting megalomaniacs, instead we ought to throw more caution to the wind and celebrate ourselves more.
Have it your way and sew forth! This cool poster is a free download from here.
Now that craft (for many of us) has become so intertwined with social media (blogging, Pinterest and Facebook, tumbler, instagram annnnd soooo on) I sometimes wonder if the fear of being judged (unfavourably) depresses our desire to go crazy during our crafting time. Maybe we worry too much about what the internet crafting community might say? Crafting should give you freedom to indulge in 'having things your way'. This freedom is absent in the shop where you are limited to what is sitting on the shelf. If when you craft you can't be free choose your own materials, shapes and textures; when can you?
When it comes to matters of taste I honestly don't think there is a right or wrong. If you (and your loved one/s) like the colour/fabric/shape combo than I think that's all that really matters. If you think that trimming pixie fairy fabric with rainbow pom pom; rocks - then GOOD! Go with it and do show me results. Go craft crazy and (first and foremost) craft for yourself and the ones you love. Don't worry so much what the craftynet will (or won't say) if anyone isn't going to be nice, that's their problem, not yours! X
Are you one for being bold in the craft room?
